Panama’s growing economy is an important market for U.S.
exports and investment. In 2006, U.S. exports to Panama totaled
$2.7 billion, a 25 percent increase over 2005 exports. Approximately
one-third of Panama’s imports are from the United States.
With implementation of the U.S.-Panama Free Trade Agreement
(FTA), nearly 90 percent of U.S. exports of consumer and industrial
products to Panama will be duty-free. Remaining barriers to
these exports will disappear within ten years. Panama currently
enjoys broad access to the U.S. market with limited barriers.
With this agreement in place, the playing field will be leveled.
The U.S.-Panama FTA is an opportunity to expand trade and
investment liberalization in a vital Latin American market.
