A free trade agreement between the United States and Colombia
would be an important step toward improving U.S. economic
opportunities throughout South America's Andean region. In
2005, U.S. goods exports to Colombia totaled $5.4 billion.
Colombia is also the second largest agricultural market for
the U.S. in Latin America, with 2005 exports reaching $667
million.
A U.S.-Colombia FTA would ultimately eliminate most tariffs
on U.S. goods and services entering the Colombian market.
Since most of Colombia's exports already enter the U.S. market
duty-free under the Andean Trade Preference Act, it would
level the playing field for U.S. exporters and result in significantly
increased exports for the United States.
